Kings Mountain Theatre class presents NC festival entries

By Staff reports
KINGS MOUNTAIN -- The Kings Mountain High School PROPS Advanced Theatre Class will present its 2016 North Carolina Theatre Conference Play Festival entries, "HKFN: The Abbreviated Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Jeff Goode and "The Other Room" by Ariadne Blayde.

The shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22, 2:30 p.m. Oct. 23 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in B.N. Barnes Auditorium on the campus of Kings Mountain High School. Tickets will be $10 for adults, and $8 for senior citizens and Cleveland County Schools Renaissance Silver Card holders. Renaissance Gold Card holders and children 5 and younger get in free.

The first entry is Jeff Goode's "HKFN: The Abbreviated Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Based on Mark Twain's novel, the show follows the actor who plays Huck as he tries to quit a production of Mark Twain's classic but controversial story. His escape is complicated when the actor who plays Jim decides to run away, as well. They are joined by the Duke and King, who lead their ragtag fugitive theater company into a series of ridiculous misadventures. Through it all, Aunt Polly tries to force them all back into the "real" play.

The second entry is "The Other Room" by Araidne Blayde, which won the VSA Playwright Discovery Award and had its world premiere at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The play follows Amelia, a brilliant teenage astronomer who happens to have autism. Lily is her classmate who happens to have an interest in astronomy. When a chance encounter after school leads to a growing friendship between them, Amelia's imagination, intelligence and constant struggles to connect with the world are revealed in the form of four characters representing her inner life.

The NCTC High School Play Festival, held to celebrate high school theater in North Carolina, features 16 shows over two days at each of eight regional sites. Each show has 45 minutes to set the stage, perform and clear the stage. After their show, the cast and crew then have an opportunity to hear feedback from professional judges in front of the audience they have just entertained. Two shows are then chosen from each site to advance to the State High School Play Festival in Greensboro, where the performance process is repeated. Again, two shows are chosen to move on and represent the state of North Carolina at the Southeastern Theatre Conference High School Play Festival.

In 2012, Kings Mountain High School won the State Play Festival and represented North Carolina at the Southeastern Theatre Conference Play Festival in Kentucky. Visit the Kings Mountain High School Theatre Department Facebook page for more information.

SOURCE: YouthPlays website note to self: though the production is described as their NCTC play festival entry and Kings Mountain is hosting the festival their cast photo is not featured on the NCTC photo page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/NCTheatreConference/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10154526093226140 So.... some sort of thing where the host school isn't an official entry maybe? No idea. Hmm... Also not listed on the load in schedule for the Festival. ALSO note that YP gives this information... 10/20/2016 (4) Organization: Shelby High School Name: Daniel Treharne Email: detreharne@clevelandcountyschools.org Shelby, North Carolina, United States ...so possibly Shelby was the actual school. Or at least someone gave that information in their rights application.

So proud of the performances of the performance KMHS Theatre presented at Gardner-Webb University this weekend for the North Carolina Theatre Conference (NCTC) High School Play Festival! We moved the audience to laughter, tears, anger and back to tears... and that was just one show. Both shows were the best they have ever been, and we could not be more proud of the effort and attitude displayed by our students.

Congratulations to everyone who performed for making it a weekend that truly showcased the power and potential of live theatre. It was further proof that high school theatre involves some of the most interesting, driven, and resourceful students you will ever meet. Special congratulations to Hendersonville High School and Canongate Catholic High School for being chosen as our site's two Distinguished Plays!

We were honored to receive the following awards:

Excellence in Theatre Arts - Scene Design for "The Other Room"

The theater department at Kings Mountain High School brought home honors from the 2016 NCTC High School Play Festival, held Nov. 4-5 at Gardner-Webb University.

The theater program, led by Heather Achter and Dan Treharne, presented "The Other Room" and "HKFN: The Abbreviated Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" at the festival.

They earned the following awards: "The Other Room": Rating: Superior; "HKFN": Rating: Superior; Festival Spirit Award; Theatre Arts Award -- Excellence in Set Design; Theatre Arts Award -- Excellence in Costumes; Barbizon Excellence in Design & Production -- Stage Management -- Jazmyn Vickers, "HKFN"; Barbizon Excellence in Design & Production -- Make Up Design -- Skylar Smith, "The Other Room"; Excellence in Acting -- Madison Green, "The Other Room"; Honorable Mention Distinguished Play -- "The Other Room."

For more than 30 years, the NCTC High School Play Festival has been designed to strengthen arts education in schools by bringing curriculum to life, challenging students to do their very best work and contributing to the development of future audiences for live performing arts. The program was named one of the top high school theater festivals by Stage Directions Magazine, is the largest high school theater event in the Southeast and has been replicated in nine other states. This year, 3,000 students from 90 schools performed 126 plays.

Each fall, professional theaters, colleges and high schools host eight regional festivals across the state. The top two outstanding productions from each of the regional sites advance to the NCTC State High School Play Festival, which will be Thursday and Friday at Greensboro College. Winners there go on to represent the state at the Southeastern Theatre Conference's annual convention, which will be in 2017 in Lexington, Ky.

Schools travel with theatrical sets and load in to a 10-by-10 backstage area. Programs have a 45-minute time limit, which includes setting up, performing the play and clearing the stage. Following their performance, students join their peers in the cheering audience to receive feedback from professional actors and directors with Broadway and Hollywood credits.

The NCTC High School Play Festival is made possible with support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources; The Beattie Foundation; Lincoln Financial Group; the Moore County Unrestricted Endowment Fund; and Barbizon Lighting Company.
