The actor lists other credits from the Victory Theatre Center
and director Maria Gobetti has worked with Victory. So maybe that was the producing company, or at least, the space

It's also possible that this was an acting class assignment leading to a performance.

I'd like to do this one act for academic purposes, but apart of it is performing it for a paying audience. This is at the high school level, and I will be directing it. I am soon to be sixteen years of age. There will be no recording of it, either. There will be a total of two performances and the tickets will be $5 each, due to their being a total of five one acts being performed in a row. The audience should be about 40 people.

POST IN 2017
interpretive reading
Cafe - Restaurant Le Vaudois
Place de la Riponne 1

Wednesday @ 7:00 p.m.

Performed by Thierry Morel

9/15/16:

I would like to use your play "Murder by Midnight" as part of a project/presentation I am doing at my local Toastmasters club here in Switzerland. I am working on a project called interpretative reading, part of which is to read a play and interpret the different characters. I am not sure whether you are familiar with Toastmasters or not and I just want to confirm that this project is for a self-development purpose only and there is no money involved. I would like to know if it is ok for me to use your play as part of this project? If not, I will choose something different.

9/16/16

Thank you for your quick reply. I was looking for a 10-15 minute long play with 2-3 characters on Google and ended up on this site where your play was listed: http://www.10-minute-plays.com/cast_size/plays_2_men_1_woman.html

As part of the project, I am meant to impersonate each character. At this stage I am planning/hoping it will be on the 26th of October but I won't have confirmation of that for another 2 weeks. Most of our presentations last around 5-7 minutes but for this one I need a 12-15 minutes slot which is not always easy to get depending on how many people want to speak on the day. I'll be happy to confirm at a later day.

10/24/16:

A short email just to confirm that I will indeed present your play this Wednesday 26th October. Thanks again.

Dear Jeff,

Fight Master Brian Byrnes suggested I write you directly, I hope you don't mind.

I'm trying to create a searchable database/catalog of fight scenes for use by my students and other students who are taking stage combat classes (specifically for SAFD spt's). The scenes would be used in class only, not for a paying audience. In creating an easily searchable database of scenes it assures students can perform at their best and don't have to take class time to find scenes- they would be able to search on their own from a computer. Using scenes from plays also interests them in wanting to do the full play some time, or at least purchasing a script to read the full play.

I'm starting to contact publishers now, as I've started the database with public domain scripts. If you'd like to check out the database and what I'm referring to please visit http://www.fightcall.com/fight-scenes-static/fight-scenes/ I've also attached a list of the scenes I'd love to include of yours. I have your book Your Swash is Unbuckled and love the scenes!

I'm hoping we can talk about a vastly discounted use for our educational purposes. I can also supply page numbers or any other information you may need. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your time,
Andrea Robertson, CT

Ames High seniors direct one-act plays

By Sarina Rhinehart, Staff Writer
srhinehart@amestrib.com

A group of seven seniors at Ames High School is directing a collection of one-act plays that will be presented at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the high school auditorium.

"It's been a lot of fun, and it's absolutely a great learning experience for us seniors," said student director Joey Bingham.

In total, there will be five one-act plays, and the students are accepting freewill donations as admission into the performances, which will be used on new lighting and other necessary upgrades for the high school theatre department.

Bingham said four years ago, there was a drama class for seniors to direct their own one-acts, but after that class was eliminated, teacher Steven Woolery decided to continue the tradition for students.

"I think that a lot of people probably underestimate the work and the knowledge that we have of what we do because we are young but all of us have worked so incredibly hard on these," said senior Ali Sandler, who is directing the one-act play "Love/Sick" about a young couple's first time saying they love each other.

"It's them grappling with their feelings for the first time for each other," Sandler said. "I really enjoyed watching them become the characters and being able to shape that and knowing I had a role in that was really amazing."

Seniors Olivia Leslie and Morgan Mulford are co-directing the one-act play, "From the Mouths of Babes."

"It's about a group of PK kids in a daycare, and one of them is in timeout and he decides that he wants to kill his teacher," Leslie said. "It has been really fun to watch them come along as a cast and build their characters."

Mulford said it has been nice having a co-director because they have the same vision and goals for the show.

"We decided we wanted a smaller show because it'd be a more intimate setting and the cast could get to know each other better," Mulford said.

The pair said one of the challenges of directing is keeping the cast on task.

"It's hard when you're their director but also their peer because they don't necessary see you as someone who should be in charge," Leslie said.

Senior Angela Dunkin, who is directing the play, "10 Reasons You Should Have Stayed Home Sick Today," said directing has been stressful because she had a cast member drop out the week of the performances and had to find a replacement quickly.

Dunkin said she picked this play because it's funny and provided flexibility in the roles. The performance focuses around high school students who don't like school and explain why sick days are needed.

For Bingham, these one-act plays are a great experience the seniors can add to their resumes. Bingham said he has been in more than 30 productions, but while attending Iowa State University next year, he already has plans to serve as an assistant director for a production.

For his one-act play, he selected "Murder by Midnight," which centers around a hotel detective investigating several murders.

"There are a lot of twists that I really enjoy," Bingham said. "I ended up with a really great cast."

This apparently led the school to believe that they already had permission OR did not require permission and so another student Linsey Callan directed the play in the same festival at Middlesex Community College in 2017
However, Linsey did acquire the rights through YouthPLAYS

I'm a directing student at Middlesex Community College in Lowell Massachusetts. I read your play Murder By Midnight and instantly fell in love. I would love the opportunity to direct this play, with your blessing of course. If there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to shoot me a text or give me a call on my cell. This play is hilarious and I would love to make it come to life.

Author: Sally Y. Hart - KCII News

Washington High School's musical theatre speech group recently received a Division I rating and has now been announced as a recipient of All-State honors. The group performed "Finding Neverland" about the man who wrote Peter Pan and it was directed by Washington Middle School choir director Jonathan Runaas. Speaking of his team, he said they put in a lot of work to create a wonderful musical theater piece and they've earned their trip to All-State.
The students include Logan Hanson, Cale Rausch, Lena Adams, Libby Schnicker and Gracie Cleverly. They are a non-performing group, meaning they've been invited to the All-State Festival in Ames later this month to receive their award but they will not perform at that time.

Hey Jeff,

We have had a great time doing your "Swash" plays these past years. We have gone through many of them in your two books, plus the ones you wrote for our Steam Punk project.

I am thinking a bit about the fall of next yearÉ.

Are you at all interested in or are you developing new "Swash" plays?

Mark Hardiman
Professor, Theatre
Lincoln Land Community College

I may not be starting as early as you think. The earliest I would do auditions would be Sept. 7. I usually try to build these shows around the talent I have. So late start is actually fine, also, if I have to, we can bring back some old favorites. I do love to work on new stuff and like to have students get the chance to see new material from living playwrights. So, if you think that may work, I'd be willing to work with that. Also, I have no problem working in re-writes as we go. I think it is a great experience for students. I have to tell you, our illustrious Governor attended our last Swash--the first half of it anyway. I think the Prince and the Poppies got to him, probably a bit close to home. It does say something about the lack of grace in power that is the hallmark of his administration. I do so appreciate your writing and the way you expouse true humanism exemplified in your work through snark and satire. That said, the show did remarkably well. LLCC does not have a theatre--long story--so we use the Hoogland Center for the Performing Arts. It is a multi-space venue and we basically beg for space and they provide it when they can. We had a run that was W, TH, FRI and the space producer was really pleased with the attendance--all considered.

Wyoming?
Spring 2016

This is Jessica Archambeau again, I emailed you a while ago asking if I could use your monologue "Moses Impression" for state drama (which by the way, went very well, I got 8th place!).I was emailing you again to ask if I could use another piece of yours for a few speech tournaments. The piece I'm talking about is Vixens monologue from The Eight Reindeer monologues. I don't have the entire script, and just found an excerpt of it in my speech room so I wanted to get your permission before going forward with it. I would have to change some of the language to cooperate with the NFL rules, but I love the message of the monologue and it's very well written.

According to:
http://www.whsaa.org/stateevents/speech/statespeech.asp There is a State Speech event March 10-12 in Buffalo WY. This is the only speech even listed. (Although this is not the NFL site, I note that they do list the Drama Event from Dec 2015, so it's possible that this site offers a comprehensive list of HS activities)
According to: http://www.speechanddebate.org/aspx/calendar.aspx?navid=563&pnavid=156 the following tournaments are in Wyoming:
Jan 29-30 - Casper - Mustang Classic @ Natrona
Feb 5-6 - Jackson - Jackson Hole High School Tournament
Feb 5-6 - Newcastle - Newcaslte High School Tournament
Feb 12-13 - Cheyenne - Cheyenne South Varsity Tournament
Feb 19-20 - Rawlins - Rawlins High School Tournament
Feb 26-27 - Greybull - Greybull High School Tournament
Feb 26-27 - Afton - Star Valley Tournament
Mar 4-5 - Worland - Worland High School Tournament
Mar 10-12 - tba - Wyoming State Tournament
Mar 17-19 - Riverton - Wind River NSDA District Tournament

There's a list of all the tournaments we're going to at this site; http://www.cheyenneeastspeechanddebate.com/tournaments.html. Most of theme are in Wyoming, but a few of the bigger ones are in Colorado and other states. Dear Mr. Goode,
Hello! My name is Jessica Archambeau. I emailed you earlier this year asking if I could use the monologue Moses Impression for state drama. Well, I just found out that I am going to nationals in comedic monologue! It is for the International Thespian Festival. I was hoping to get your permission to continue doing your monologue at the festival. I would love to be able to showcase it to more people!
Thanks so much,

Calling all playwrights, writers, and storytellers! Be part of STARCROPOLIS!

The is ready to climb a mountain with Starcropolis. It's bigger than anything we've ever tackled in our ongoing mission to use theatre to galvanize a community, using new work to entertain and inspire an audience.

Starcropolis is a unique theatrical event designed to throw live theatre into the consciousness of an entire community in a totally unique way (well maybe not totally unique to the ancient Greeks). Annually, the Greeks would ascend the highest hill in the city, the acropolis, and gather together under the sky in glorious amphitheaters. There they would bear witness to great dramas and comedies, helping them understand each other and their complicated world, while sharing a profound moment of connection.

So now Roanoke will gather and ascend our acropolis...Mill Mountain, and sit below our great neon Parthenon, the Star, to witness stories that will bring laughter and maybe a few tears, while reminding us that we are all together in our attempt to navigate this amazing and complex world we share.

Starcropolis will be presented by the Hollins Theatre Institute, with the City of Roanoke, and others.

The Inspiration

In a world where electronic connection overshadows human connection, it's our goal to show how the live theatre event is more important than ever. Stories and characters are a source of inspiration much needed in today's world, and sharing them through the live theatre event where people sit together breathing the same air and experiencing the same magical moment is one of the most potent ways to connect, energize and inspire a community. And we believe it's our stories, those that come directly from the community that are the most important. So we are launching a new phenomenon for our region: Star Stories.

The Writers and Playwrights

Starcropolis will celebrate the writers and storytellers who invent ways to share these stories. You are the great communicators who can connect an audience and an entire community. Playwrights, novelists, short story writers, journalists, storytellers, folk-writers and writers of all genres are invited to submit material. Anyone with a story and a vision is encouraged to participate. Playwright's from the Kennedy Center award winning Playwrights Lab at Hollins University will lead the way.

The Source: the Roanoke Star

At its best, theatre can be personal and universal at the same time. The Roanoke Star is weirdly universal, and connects everyone who lives in the area, or even passes through. Everyone has some relationship to, or at least an attitude about this wonderfully crazy phenomenon that shines over our valley. And some of us have great stories directly related to the Star. An entire audience that surrounds Roanoke, Virginia is connected by this much-loved icon. We all see it, sometimes several times a day...it brings comfort, it brings smiles, it brings perspective when you stand at the lookout and see your world in front of your eyes. The view makes you want to fly. It's a place where confessions slip out, jokes are played, epiphanies are reached, joyful proclamations are made, and souls are revealed. People go up there for first dates, to make important phone calls, to get engaged, decide to divorce, break the news about a coming baby...people have even gotten married up there.

A city official recently shared that when his son was headed off to college, he and his best friends went out for one last night of celebration before they scattered in different directions. When his dad asked him where they went, he said, "the Star." It isn't hard to imagine the dialogue as these guys tried to say goodbye to each other and the only life they'd known, while anticipating the unfolding of a new life beyond Roanoke and the neon glow of the Star.

A professor at Hollins who just became an empty nester said every year on the first day of school since kindergarten, he would wake up his two daughters at 5:30, and in their pajamas they'd go to the star. They would stand at the lookout and while gazing at the awe-inspiring view, they'd talk about all their hopes and dreams for the coming school year. This annual ritual lasted until both girls left for college, leaving an indelible imprint on them all. He said it was sometimes a little awkward when they'd stop at a restaurant for breakfast, where people would stare at this motley crew eating pancakes while still in their pajamas.

The Event

Starcropolis is a theatre festival designed to energize, inspire and unite an audience...a community... in a way that only live theatre can. On September 4, 2016 Mill Mountain will come alive with theatre.

We will assemble material for three separate stages that will be erected on top of Mill Mountain. Each stage will showcase several short plays, monologues, story-telling pieces, and even songs (in the vicinity of 5 to 10 minutes each) all set at the star. The main-stage event will be created by a team of artists from the Hollins Theatre Institute under the direction of Ernie Zulia, in collaboration with a team of theatre professionals from Mill Mountain Theatre. The main stage will be erected on the site where the original Mill Mountain Playhouse stood. Regional audiences were entertained there for years before it burned to the ground in 1976. This tragic event lead to its triumphant move to Center In The Square in downtown Roanoke, where the much loved theatre is currently celebrating it's 50th anniversary.

Two satellite stages, called "Fifty Folding Chairs" will feature more work from our pool of submissions mounted by Roanoke's fine community theatres, colleges, high schools and churches. Other whimsical and fun elements of the festival will include a theatrical walk up to the mountaintop along the ascension trail , with performances called "Star Bursts" along the way. This will be bookended with a torchlight descent following the performances. And among other fun events will be a "Starry-okee" stage featuring karaoke versions of songs with "stars" in them from Stardust to Starry Night to Twinkle Twinkle.

Additional performances during Labor Day weekend are being considered at Mill Mountain Theatre, Center In The Square.

The Primary Resource for Inspiration:
Star Stories gathered and archived by Roanoke Public Libraries

As a very important first step towards Starcropolis, the Roanoke Public Library has launched "Star Stories," which we have lovingly knick-named "Starry-Corp," after the brilliant NPR phenomenon, Story Corp. The fantastic library team, headed by Nathan Flinchum in The Virginia Room will be gathering hundreds, hopefully thousands of Star Stories, both oral histories and written stories, from individuals throughout the community. They will be archived digitally, in print and recorded voice. These stories will be made available to the playwrights and writers as inspirational material for the original pieces that will be featured at Starcropolis.

Playwrights can adapt stories directly, build off ideas these stories spark, or create original material that is totally fictional but captures the spirit of Star Stories. Pieces will all be set at the star, and should be 5 to 10 minutes in length.

Dates, Deadlines, Details

The first ever Starcropolis is scheduled for a one day event on Labor Day weekend, September 4, 2016. We will workshop some of the material as works-in-progress during the 2016 Hollins-Mill Mountain Winter Festival of New Works in January 2016, where we will put Star Stories in front of workshop audiences. Although we will continue to accept stories through early spring, work submitted by December 1, 2015 will receive priority consideration.

All stories collected by the library will be made available to Starcropolis writers for adaptation and/or inspiration. Waivers will be signed by owners of the stories for their work to be adapted in any way for the Starcropolis event only. For Further information on how to access these stories, contact:
Kevin Ferguson, Starcropolis Dramaturg, Hollins Theatre Institute:
Starcropolis@gmail.com or FergusonKD@hollins.edu

People from throughout the region will be submitting oral histories or written Star Stories to the library by calling (540) 632-2203 to leave a recording or call (540) 853-2073 or email virginiaroom@gmail.com to make an appointment. In addition, they can record a Star story at http://roanokeva.gov/virginiaroom.
