The Adult Theatre Group at the American School of Dubai presents

directed by Aida Laubach & Lisa Harter

Good afternoon,

My name is Kristopher Williams. I belong to the Adult Theatre Group at the American School of Dubai. We are planning to stage one of your plays, Murder By Midnight, at the upcoming Short & Sweet Dubai 2017. We plan to perform the play only once although there is the possibility of a second performance.

The Camel Stub - February 4, 2017
"Hotel detective Dick Piston" should give you an idea of this play's genre, a parody noir with some seriously raunchy undertones (or overtones really.) There is nothing subtle about this piece and there shouldn't be. I actually would have preferred seeing it even more OTT to bring out the ludicrous nature of the script. The co-direction of Aida Laubach & Lisa Harter saw adequate pacing and clean blocking, but bringing out more from the script will definitely improve this piece.

It was a laudable effort by the performers, all of them first-timers from our understanding. Though it perhaps needed more confidence and strength in the characters, the fun of the script did balance the components. This served as a nice cap to the first half and gave us a wonderful range of plays to think about during the interval.

Hello Mr. Goode

I am writing to you on behalf of the students of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. Our Drama students would like to put on a production of your play, "Murder by Midnight" for their Drama Lab. This would be a student-run free-of-charge production for one night for about 60 audience members.

Please let me know if we have your permission to put on this production as soon as you can.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

The DramaLabs are a Phillips Academy Andover organization that produces 10-minute plays EVERY Friday! We're completely student run! And we're AWESOME!

The Drama Lab is Andover's entirely student-run theatre organization. Each year, the Drama Lab presents about forty one-act plays acted, directed, and produced by students. Our shows are around fifteen minutes in length, have small casts, a three week production period, limited technical requirements, and are a perfect way to get involved with acting or directing at Andover. Students interested in acting can go to our cattle call auditions held twice a term. Students interested in directing can find a play and submit an application towards the end of each term. The Drama Lab also sponsors special events like The 24 Hour Plays and workshops in directing or auditioning.

Mr. Goode-

I am a high school teacher of two drama courses, including one where students direct one act plays. With your permission, we would like to perform "Murder by Midnight." Our one-act is one evening of performances on April 21. Although our auditorium will seat just under 900 people, we expect about 100-150 at the most. We will charge $3 for tickets. If royalties are involved, it is preferred to allow a purchase order, although other arrangements can be made. Because this is a school, payments take forever. An invoice is appreciated.

Let me know of anything you need from us.

Thanks!

Good afternoon. My name is Kayla Holbrook and I am a Theatre Major at Morehead State University. THE ACE FEST 2017

Wow, it's been a whirlwind of a month here! ACE Fest 2017 ended with a bang the prior weekend with Performance Day, capping off a month full of incredible dramas, dance and vocals performances as well as art galleries and workshops. We've had two weekends of our Student Directed Festival (SDF), where students do, well, everything from acting and directing to managing backstage and front of house work. Then we had the Art.c Gallery + Workshops and finally, Performance Day. We'll attempt to give anyone who didn't manage to drop by any of these outstanding options a bit of a recap of things, but obviously we'll fall a little short of what it was like in person. So first things first: Student Directed Festival The SDF has been around for quite a while now but it just never fails to impress, even when you measure this entirely student-driven project against drama productions by professionals. Over the first two weekends of the ACE Fest, we've had some great performances such as 'Chaos' which entertained the audience to no end with its brilliant script and, of course, the students' acting chops. In a nutshell, it's about the inevitable decay of society when people start to pull on a door which is clearly marked 'PUSH'. Hilarious!

'Gray Matter' was another one which resounded with the audience. It's about stereotypes, and how we can get caught up in our perceptions of others, but with a nice little twist. Just like every year before this one, our SDF was a success simply because of how it all panned out: Our students driving this thing, pouring their sweat and tears into their scripts, and sacrificing their time week in, week out in an effort to make it all come together. It's important to remember that these are full-time high school kids who have a lot going on: Classes, coursework, exams, sports, hobbies, family obligations - Just how they manage it bring it all in balance is one of the most remarkable experiences of being here. Simply fantastic! Here are some of the best shots:

PHOTOS

Art.c Gallery & Workshop

After the two weekends of some seriously thrilling drama performances, the Art.c Gallery & Workshop was next. Held at Rendezbrew Cafe in TTDI. The event showcased some of the finest work across the board from our Art & Design students and offered workshops teaching skills like Stamp Printing and the aptly named Papercutting Wonders. It's always amazing to see the kinds of works our kids produce, and there's never been a year where we don't walk away impressed. This year would prove to be no different:

Performance Day

With SDF and the Art.c Gallery & Workshop in the books, there was only Performance Day left and our students would let the ACE Fest 2017 end with a crescendo! On Performance Day, a selection of some the best dramas, vocal performances and dance routines from all our events through the year come together for three shows and it's easily one of the highlights of the school year. As always it's just too difficult to single out any one of the acts as the best, so let's just have the pictures do the talking:

With a resounding success, we bid farewell to the ACE Fest 2017. The show must go on though, as they say, and so it will. Next year's ACE Fest still feels quite a while away but for the kids and teachers involved in it, the groundwork is already now being laid in their Skills Enhancement classes. As with everything, a healthy balance is important and we strongly believe in bringing tough academics into a nice little tandem with the performing arts. Celebrating this year's ACE Fest is that much sweeter when we can not only highlight our students successes on stage but also those on the world stage of academic achievements, so to say. What do we mean by that? Have a read right here!

NOTE TO SELF - IN 2018 STUDENTS FROM THE same school directed the same play for the same festival which makes me wonder if this one was cancelled before going up? facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SriEmasInternationalSchool/

It is not unusual for students to omit follow up emails, but... Another student directed the same show for the 2018 festival, which would be odd if they had seen it just the year before.

Hello Mr. Goode

I am contacting you in hopes to gain information to the performance rights of your play "Murder by Midnight". I am an acting student at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. For my final assessment I have been tasked with directing a one act play of my choosing for our University Theatre Ensemble's "Stage And Screen Showcase" (SASS). The SASS assessment consists of each student directing a play and performing in another while learning the different techniques of directing during the production. As part of this task we are to go about this as professionally as we would have to in the real world outside our education, thus entailing the need to purchase the rights to the plays that are copyrighted.

I would like to know if the rights are available at all? If so, how much would it cost to be performed for two nights? And who/where would payment be sent to?

The information for the showcase: SASS will run for eight nights between the 11th Oct and the 21st Oct with sixteen other one act plays.
"Murder by Midnight" will be performed once per night on the 20th and 21st of October 2017, alongside three other short plays at the CSU Riverina Playhouse here in Wagga Wagga. (only with permissions of course)
Ticket prices are not set yet, but they usually sit around $10-$15 AUD.
The Riverina Playhouse seats a maximum of 249 people.
SASS is part of an assessment and is therefore a non-profit event.

If you have any questions regarding the overall showcase or to the performance of the play, I'll happily answer in further detail. If you would like to speak to my lecturers, I can give you their contact details.

Thank you,
John W. Jones,
CSU Student.

November 10-12, 2017
MCTC Student Directed One-Acts 2017
- Apolliad Theatre
7205 Mesa College Drive
San Diego, CA 92111
Friday, Saturday & Sunday @ 8:00 p.m.

Experience the next generation of playwrights with this trio of student-directed one act plays from the talented San Diego Mesa College Theatre Company. Presented at the Apolliad Theatre, the show includes "", which features a gruesome murder, a mysterious woman in a towel and a private eye -- all in a mere 10 minutes! There's also "The Wedding Story" ("Will it be the 'perfect' wedding? Or a disastrous train wreck? Only The Storyteller knows for sure!") and Tennessee Williams classic "27 Wagons Full of Cotton" about the consequences that must be paid when tough choices are made.

The Mesa Press December 12, 2017
Anna Fiorino, Staff Writer
The Mesa College Theatre Company presented "27 Wagons Full of Cotton," "The Wedding Story," and "Murder by Midnight" at the Mesa College Apolliad Theatre on Nov.10-12. All acts were directed and performed by Mesa students.

Tennessee Williams' "27 Wagons Full of Cotton," directed by William Smith, had heavy historical context, but conveyed elements of rape culture still prevalent today. The act exposed an interesting cultural power dynamic through a destructive relationship between a Southern couple, Jake and Flora Meighan. After Jake burns down his rival Vicarro's mill, Vicarro retaliates by seducing Jake's wife. Michaela Griffin gave a chilling performance as Flora, a woman who is continually abused (physically and emotionally) by her husband and eventually raped by the rival neighbor. "Based on current events," said Smith, "it is obvious that this play resonates just as powerfully today as when it was originally written."

Jullianne Homokay's "The Wedding Story," directed by JaVon Clarke, picks away at the classic fairytale faade. The act began with a father reading a bedtime story to his kids. The fairytale couple took on a life of their own, however, and reclaimed their story-- emphasizing realism over the perfectly curated happily-ever-after. "The Wedding Story" was humorous, relatable, and a presented a refreshing perspective on relationships and the reality of marriage. "Do try to be realistic in your expectations of the ones you love!!!" said Clarke.

Jeff Goode's "Murder by Midnight," the final one-act, was directed by Michelle Smith. Sensational and facetious, the short act focused on Dick Piston, played by Ryan Nebreja, a hotel detective trying to solve a murder. He has ten minutes on the clock before he loses the case to the day shift. "I was intrigued with the noir style and the challenge of the over-exaggerated comic elements of the piece," said Smith.

The succession of the three different pieces highlighted the unique structure, thespian elements, and themes characteristic to each act, as well as each director's personal style and preferences. Overall-- an impressive, professional performance from the Mesa College Theatre Company.
