Students ready to make a SPLaSH
by Deb Nahrgang | Jan 25, 2018 | Campus Notes |

Saint Mary's students will present "SPLaSH!," the biennial Short Play Showcase that puts students and their work front and center. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 7-10, and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 10-11, in the Studio Theatre.

"SPLaSH!" features a kaleidoscope of professionally written and student developed one-act plays from our playwriting class that are produced, directed, designed, and acted by Department of Theatre and Dance students. This year, there are six great "shorts," including four original works by SMUMN theatre students:

  • Victoria Madigan takes on Tony Award-winning playwright Christopher Durang's Nina in the Morning.
  • Peyton Roberson brings to the stage the further adventures of Dick Piston, Hotel Detective, in Jeff Goode's 10-minute mystery film noir spoof, Murder by Midnight.
  • Then Roberson shifts gears to playwriting, handing his script off to Stefan Kahlstorf to direct. A demon helps out on his host's first date. What could go wrong? Find out in "My Wingman is a Demon."
  • Directed by Shania Merchlewitz, Margo Hansen's Lix Dalakan takes a man with revolution on his mind time-traveling 1000 years into our dystopian future.
  • Michael Britton will present a staged reading of his absurdist-inspired play in development titled Everytheory.
  • And Darren Cajipo directs John L. Donovan's autobiographical The Lovable Losers. One die-hard fan roots from abroad for the Cubs to reverse the curse during the 7th game of the World Series.

The variety of genres ranging from comedy, drama, and sci-fi to absurdism, mystery, and much more means that there will be something for everyone.

Tickets are available at pagetheatre.org or by calling the Page Theatre box office at 507-457-1715.

  • Hello Mr. Goode,

I'm writing to inquire about securing rights and making royalties payment arrangements to produce your one-act play Murder by Midnight at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota.

One of our directing students is very excited about doing it and we would like to include it as part of our showcase of student directed one-act plays. I am the faculty adviser for the showcase.

The performance of this event, entitled SPLASH, is scheduled for 5 performances Feb. 7-11, 2018 and will be held in our Performance Center's Studio Theatre. Audience capacity will be no more than 80 seats.

Please contact me if you have any questions or need more information. Thanks for the play! and let me know how to proceed.

STUDENT DIRECTED FESTIVAL - AN ACE EDVENTURE PLAY EXTRAVAGANZA

The curtains have come down on the final season of the Student Directed Festival.

Rehearsed, directed, designed, prepared, and performed by the graduating students of the ACE EdVenture Programme, the Student Directed Festival was spread over three seasons, with 21 performances.

Straight from the students' hearts, each of these plays were executed flawlessly, showcasing their talents, passion, and blood, sweat and tears. These raw emotions came in skits covering a myriad of topics ranging from relationships and marriage, to office politics and death.

To the students, we say, "Keep up the great work!" for putting on such a delightful performance.

Do check out some photos of the performances.

    Dear Mr. Goode

Hello. I teach Theatre at Concord University. We are located in Southern West Virginia. This semester I am teaching Play Directing and have 8 students in the class.

We plan on presenting 10 minute plays and I would like to secure the royalties for one of my students to present your very funny play Murder by Midnight.

We will do two performances. The dates will be October 2 and 3. We will perform these in our black box theatre which seats 150.

    Students Direct Eclectic One-Act Plays
    By Savannah Cooper

On Oct. 2 and 3, Concord University's Theatre Department hosted 10-minute one-act plays. Each play was directed by a student from Karen Vuranch's Fundamentals of Directing class. These directors included Elisha Fraley, Laya Gilpin, Cameron White, Brianna Duckworth, Hannah Gates, Caleb Zopp, Tiffany Dillon and Chris Cohenour.

The directors chose their own play, adapted it for Concord's theatre and watched it all play out in front of an audience. The genres of the plays ranged from comedy, to drama, to farce. The first play, "While the Auto Waits," was written by Walter Wykes and directed by Elisha Fraley. This play revolved around a man and a woman pretending to be people they are not. While participating in flirtatious dialogue, the two present themselves as people from different worlds and socioeconomic backgrounds. By the end of the play, the audience was left wondering who the people really were and why they chose to lie about their identities.

The next performance was "First Fireworks," written by Alex Brown and directed by Laya Gilpin. This heart-wrenching scene portrays the last conversation between a sick mother and her pregnant daughter. While watching fireworks in their favorite spot, the two bonded one last time and discussed their emotional journeys. Tears could be seen throughout the audience as the lights went down in the theatre.

Thirdly, "This Was Our Music," written by Mike Rothschild and directed by Cameron White, took the stage. This scene shifted the mood in the theatre by bringing comedy to the forefront. In this play, a jazz DJ is told how he needs to start doing his job by a new programming manager. This leads to an argument and an on-air declaration by the DJ that "Nobody who got anywhere didn't get there by playing along."

"Murder by Midnight," written by Jeff Goode and directed by Brianna Duckworth, continued the comedy genre. By following along with Dick Piston, a hotel detective, the audience witnessed sexual innuendo's, ironic deaths and a twist ending. By having interactive dialogues, Dick Piston (played by Cameron White) made the audience feel included in the story.

The fifth play was "Grey Matter," written by Jeanette Farr-Hawkins and directed by Hannah Gates. This didactic storyline left the audience with a scene to think about. Two women question each other's credibility by only seeing outward appearances. By going back and forth, the women engage in a conversation that teaches them to get to know someone before defining their personality and morals.

The next play, directed by Caleb Zopp and written by Nick Zagone, captured the audience by frustrating them with a series of questions. "I Can't Think of It Right Now" involved a couple spending the night trying to remember the name of the movie "Braveheart." The audience goes through agony by wanting to shout out the name of the movie. By the end of the play, the two characters forget everything, even their son's name. Once the title comes to their mind, they, along with the audience, shout it out with relief.

The seventh play presented was "Post-Its: Notes on a Marriage," directed by Tiffany Dillon and written by Paul Dooley." This comedic yet touching story followed the lives of a married couple who had conversations through post-it notes. Through the early stages of dating, to having a child, to hitting a rough spot in the marriage and finally rekindling their love, the couple gave the audience a glimpse into a normal life in just 10 minutes.

"The Man Who Couldn't Dance," written by Jason Katims and directed by Chris Cohenour, ended out the night. This story took the audience back to where a failed relationship went wrong. The intense scene was made up of a man and woman confessing their flaws and wondering what could have been.

Cohenour believes that all the plays were a huge success. He says, "Personally, I am extremely happy with how they turned out. I hope, if nothing else, people walked away with more to think about than what they came in with."

He continues, "While there were comedies that allowed for people to relax, it offered a lot for people to think about; anywhere from relationships with one's parents, to issues present in today's socioeconomic climate. It leaves so much for one to think about."

Along with these plays, the Concord Theatre Department plans on putting on other plays this semester, including "The Crucible."

    LADY LUCK ... Angelique Rowan

Hello Jeff Goode, My name is Darien Witter and I'm a student at Missouri Western State University. I'm in Directing for the Stage 1 and i'm seeking the rights to perform your 10 minute play Murder By Midnight for my final. My final would be around the first week of December, the play will be performed one time and open to the public with no charge in a black box setting with 55 seats. If you could point me in the right direction as to where to obtain these rights I would be very grateful. Thank you, Darien Witter
Missouri Western State University Theatre, Cinema and Dance had an event Nov 29-Dec 2 called Short and Sweet<.A>. Q. Is it possible that the performance was included in the festival?
Con-argument - the date given to YouthPlays is Dec 3 (the next day) so maybe not. Maybe strictly for class. Here's the Facebook event blurb.
A collection of short films and plays! Open Seating. Short and Sweet will take place in Kemper Recital Hall, located in Spratt Hall near the Walter Cronkite Memorial. Ticket Prices are as follows (not including tax): $12 Adult $6 Student $10 MWSU Faculty/Staff Free for MWSU Students with valid ID. ENGLISH EAGLE THEATER murder by midnight DIR: shahin mofidi # theater_shore # theater # theater city # theaters #english #theater #theaters #theaterlife #lovequotes #love
    https://www.facebook.com/shahin.mofidi
probably FB page of director Shahin Mofidi
    Lives in: Tehran, Iran
(NOPE!) based on their pictures, these are two diff't guys and the second one is the more likely candidate because of cross-references with his brother Mobin
    https://www.facebook.com/shahin.kurdi.9
    different possible director
    lives in Khorramabad
    from Sanandaj, Iran
cross-referencing with the brother Mobin and references to his singing in Kurdish suggests that this latter one is more likely the correct person. (Although its also possible they also lived in Tehran)

    CONCLUSIONS:
Because several of the PICGRA photos are have a #Sanandaj hastag, I am going to ASSUME that that is the best guess city for this theatre company, even though some clues indicate that he lives somewhere else.
