(President Bush, speaking before a gathering of 9/11 victims — September 11th, 2006)

GEORGE BUSH

On September 11th, 2001 — a day I will never forget — two thousand of our citizens died horribly and needlessly at the hands of foreign terrorists. And I thought… I think we can do better than that.

Now, today, five years have passed, and I’m happy to report that 2700 Americans have died in Iraq. Just as horribly and just as needlessly as those who died on September 11th. And the number of Iraqi dead is in the hundred thousands. Why, just last month alone over 3500 Iraqis died violently. Osama bin Laden can’t even come close to those numbers. Our victory in the War of Terror is almost certain.

This is truly a proud day to be an American. Congratulations, and God Bless.
