A wonderful time at A Very Goode Christmas at PACA!

BY MICHAEL MAHLER

I decided that I was going to catch the plays by Jeff Goode at PACA (Performing Arts Center & Theater) last night. The first act was the screamingly funny The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. About 8 years ago, I was in a previous production and played Cupid, the gay reindeer. (Yes, I know, it's a stretch to play a gay character.)

I ended up sitting in the back row, next to my friend Jenn, with whom I did theater years ago. I was telling her how when I did it, my friend Christine, who played Vixen, said that I should wear leather chaps, vest and harness to go with the antlers. which I did. I had some family come to a performance (probably a bit out there), and on the way out, I was asked "where did you get the waders." (I LOVE that story.)

Jenn and I then were talking about the Erie Times-News article, which said the playwright was making a trip from LA to see the show and was supposed to be in the audience. He had never been to Erie before, and he and the show's director (Jeff Rodland) had never met in person before, even though they had corresponded for over a decade. I told Jenn I didn't even know what Goode looked like.

A guy in the next row cleared his throat and pointed to the guy sitting directly in front of me. So, Jeff Goode and I chatted a bit, and thank the Goddess I had been saying nice stuff about the play. Winking smile

I turned my phone back on at intermission to check messages, and I was also holding on to a copy of the program. The woman seated on my other side asked if she could see that. I wasn't sure what she meant, so I asked if she meant the cell phone or the program. The woman was referring to the program, not the cell phone. Jenn joked something about sexting messages and we both laughed. Of course, the messages I was checking actually were of a rather torrid nature, but that was about the performance to come at home. (Ho, ho, ÔHO!)

The performance was superb, and I highly recommend it! The second act consisted of other works by the author that I hadn't seen before and which were terrific. The play runs through next Saturday and I strongly recommend getting their early. The house was completely filled!
