Rudolph Isn't the Only Reindeer With a Back Story

By April Johnson, Special to the Independent

Christmas is a time of heightened bliss, but for some it can be a bit disturbing. In "Reindeer Monologues," Ava Burton and Mark Miller interpreted the lives of eight reindeer and how they feel at Christmastime.

The reindeer took this opportunity to discuss whether or not Santa Clause is an overly jolly, fat, pervert, while also revealing their innermost secrets. This one-night-only show last week at BC Gallery in Laguna Beach was a perfect addition to the holiday season.

Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen all have stories to tell about their lives as Santa's reindeer. The brilliant Burton exhibited a provocative performance, while playing the part of Cupid, and also channels the "gangster" reindeer Blitzen, who claims that Santa Claus raped her.

Miller's portrayal of Comet was especially gut busting, and will have audiences laughing until they cry. Here's a sample of what Comet's character was like. "You want to talk about sexual harassment? Talk to the elves. They were towel boys in an Irish brothel when St. Nick found them." Even though the humor is outstanding, all jokes aside, "Reindeer Monologues" tells an important message about the power of abuse and sexual harassment.

Each reindeer has their own distinctive antlers and various personas, which capture a viewer's attention and make them wish there were more.

The show was a welcome distraction from the hustle and bustle of Christmas as well as a way to enjoy the laughter and friendship of like-minded people.

Thumbs up to Burton and Miller for an excellent performance.
