TheatreZone was founded in 1995 by a company of committed local theater artists to produce
socially significant theatre works and to be a forum for distinct voices and ideas. We seek to break
down barriers to participation in the arts through training opportunities for youth and adults,
affordable pricing, non-traditional casting, and opportunities for artists to experiment and create
new work.
TheatreZone’s programming is year round and includes a mainstage season (5 plays in 1997),
the Chelsea Youth Theatre, an adult Actor Training Program, and a touring ensemble which
presents original improvised works. Plays produced range from Boston premieres to modern
repertoire to award winning contemporary classics. Recent productions include Blood Wedding
by Federico Garcia Lorca, The Eight: Reindeer Monologues by Jeff Goode, Cloud 9 by Caryl
Churchill, Aunt Dan and Lemon by Wallace Shawn, Reckless by Craig Lucas, and Sincerity
Forever by Mac Wellman.
TheatreZone is based in Chelsea, MA. Located just north of Boston, Chelsea is a working class
community with a remarkably diverse population. From its Italian, Irish, Jewish, and Polish
traditions to its newest Latin American, Asian, and Bosnian residents, Chelsea is a city defined by
its various cultures. Chelsea is the home of the state’s longest running Latin American Festival,
and it is currently estimated that half the population is Spanish speaking. While our office, our
educational programming for youth and adults, and the bulk of our rehearsals take place in
Chelsea, we continue to produce in a small theater in downtown Boston, Actors Workshop.
