ACT TWO FADE IN INT. COURTHOUSE - DAY Andy and Barney are discussing the case over sandwiches. Rafe listens in at the bars of the jail cell. BARNEY You don't figure Otis for a degenerate gambler, do you? ANDY Well, he was a degenerate at just about everything else. But a gambler's not like to bring so much money home. Especially not a gambler with a drinking habit and a different girl to squire around every weekend. Rafe busts out laughing. RAFE Well, I'll be. I wouldn'ta thought he had it in him-- BARNEY You pipe down in there, Rafe. You're eavesdroppin' on official police business. RAFE If you didn't still have me in the pokey, I wouldn't be droppin' from no eaves. ANDY I reckon he's right, Barney, go ahead and turn him loose. BARNEY But Andy, we got him red-handed on operating a illegal still and discharging a fire arm in the vicinity of police personnel. ANDY I know, but we got bigger fish to fry. Barney goes to the jail cell in a huff and lets Rafe out. BARNEY You heard the Sheriff, you're free to go. Small fry! RAFE Thank'ee, Sheriff. ANDY I would like to know what you think Otis didn't have in him that's so darn funny, though. RAFE Don't you fellas get it? All that money and all them gals? Otis Campbell was the town gigolo. BARNEY Oh come on, now! RAFE It's probably what drove him to drink. I've only got the one woman and she's enough to put me over the edge. ANDY That's nice. Go on home now. BARNEY Go on, get! Before I haul you in for loitering. Rafe sticks out his tongue at Barney as he ducks out the door. Andy sits back down to finish his lunch. BARNEY So Otis was a gigolo? Kinda hard to picture. ANDY I don't know anyone that desperate, frankly. BARNEY What about your Aunt Bee? ANDY Don't make me come over there and smack you. They are interrupted by OPIE dropping by for a visit. OPIE How's it goin', paw? Have you solved the case yet? ANDY Not yet. Not a whole lot of clues. Just this envelope of money. While Andy and Barney continue to discuss the case, Opie pokes around in the clues. BARNEY If he did have a mess o' girlfriends, there's your motivation. One of them found out about the others and got jealous and offed him. You know how gals can get. ANDY Still, that's a lot of money for any gal to lay out on a weekly basis. How much you figure Juanita makes over at the diner? BARNEY Oh, I dunno. Quarter a plate adds up, Andy. ANDY So maybe 6 or 8 dollars a shift. And she's about the highest paid woman in Mayberry. BARNEY That's why Otis was running a volume business. Different girl every weekend gives 'em time to save up for their night of romance. For all we know, he coulda been keeping company with every woman in town. OPIE Even Miss Crump? ANDY What--! Opie, cover your ears. He does. ANDY Now why you wanna go puttin' ideas in the boy's head? BARNEY He's gotta learn somewhere, Anj. ANDY What about your Thelma Lou? Are you gonna put her on the list of suspects? BARNEY No need for that, Andy. That is one satisfied lady. ANDY Didn't you tell me, two weeks ago, she couldn't see you on account of she was washing her hair? And Thelma Lou is a brunette. Barney splutters. Then he notices Opie shaking out the envelope of money. BARNEY Now, don't mess with that, Opie. That's state's evidence. OPIE This money's got hairs on it. Barney goes over to take a closer look. BARNEY He's right, Andy. Little red hairs. Like on a barber shop floor. ANDY Opie, didn't you just get your hair cut this morning? OPIE Aunt Bee sent me over. She said I was lookin' kinda shaggy. BARNEY How did Opie's hairs get on Otis's money? ANDY Maybe Opie's head and Otis's wallet were both in the same place this morning. BARNEY Otis Campbell's pants? ANDY No! Floyd Lawson's barber shop. CUT TO
