ACT THREE FADE IN INT. COURTHOUSE - DAY Barney hustles Goober and Floyd into separate jail cells. BARNEY Get in there! And you get in the other one! GOOBER Ain't you gonna put us in a cell together? We's wanted for the same crime. FLOYD You don't mind, do you, Barney? It gets awful lonesome in the big house. BARNEY Shut your trap and get in there before I charge you with resisting arrest. FLOYD (worried) That could go on our permanent record. They obediently file into their cages. Andy comes in. ANDY What are you doing, Barney? We've got two cells. We don't have to use both of 'em. BARNEY Standard interrogating technique, Andy. I read about it in Policeman's Monthly. Separate the prisoners - keeps 'em from keeping their stories straight - then we sweat 'em a spell and see who cracks first. GOOBER You gonna sweat us now, Barney? BARNEY Quiet in there, Goober! FLOYD He's awful touchy today. BARNEY No fraternizing, Floyd! GOOBER Little late for that. BARNEY Goober! The prisoners fall silent. ANDY Looks like you got 'em not to talk. Now what? BARNEY (whispers) Sensory deprivation technique. The silence eats at their nerves until they're ready to confess to just about anything. ANDY Well, we don't want 'em confessing to anything. Just the murder. BARNEY Do you want to do this?? ANDY No, go on. You're the expert. Barney unlocks Goober's cell and goes inside. Goober looks apprehensive as Barney sits down across from him. BARNEY All right Goober, talk. GOOBER What you wanna talk about? BARNEY The murder! GOOBER I don't know nothing about that. BARNEY You're sure? GOOBER Honest, Barney, we didn't have nothing to do with it. BARNEY Really? GOOBER Scout's honor. BARNEY Because that's not what Floyd's saying. GOOBER It ain't? BARNEY We got him over in the next room and he's singing like a canary. GOOBER He is? FLOYD (O.S.) No, I'm not, Barney. BARNEY Floyd, mind your business! FLOYD But I don't know any more about it than Goober does. BARNEY Floyd, I'm trying to run a investigation here. FLOYD And you're doing a wonderful job, Barney. But Goober, don't believe him, I never said any such thing. BARNEY I said pipe down, Floyd! GOOBER Barney, is this the part where you sweat us? 'Cause you're lookin' a little hot. Andy chuckles to himself, as he heads for the door. ANDY Well, I'll leave you three to it. BARNEY Where are you going, Andy? ANDY I want to run over to the bank and see if they'll put this evidence in a safe deposit box for us. BARNEY What if I need someone to be the bad cop? ANDY I think you're doin' just fine. Andy grins and heads out the door -- CUT TO
