INT. OPIE'S BEDROOM - NIGHT Opie is staring out the window when Andy comes in to check on him. ANDY You all right, son? OPIE Paw, can I ask you something? ANDY Well, sure. You can always ask. OPIE Did you mean what you said before about honesty and takin' responsibility? ANDY Well, sure. OPIE Paw, if I was honest with you about something, would you promise not to get mad? ANDY That all depends on what I'm not getting mad about. But I promise I'd be disappointed if you didn't think you could tell me the truth. OPIE (not very reassured) Yeah. That's what I thought you'd say. ANDY Is there something you want to tell me? OPIE I think I better sleep on it first. You don't mind, do you, paw? ANDY Better get to it, then. Good night. OPIE Paw? ANDY Yes, Opie? OPIE What's gonna happen to Floyd and Goober? ANDY Oh, I reckon there's gonna be a trial. We'll send 'em on up to Mount Pilot. OPIE That's probably for the best. ANDY Why do you say that? OPIE At least they don't have to be brought up on charges in front of all their friends here in Mayberry. Andy is starting to suspect something. ANDY Well, that's a good point. Maybe we ought to have the trial here after all. Let 'em see all the good people they hurt by not telling the truth when they had the chance. OPIE That's not what I meant, paw. ANDY I hear they're soft on crime up at the County Court. I reckon it'd be easier to get a murder conviction right here in town. OPIE But you said they was innocent! ANDY Well, now, we really don't know what they are, do we? Maybe they're both guilty, and they're lying about lying about it to make themselves look innocent. OPIE But paw--! ANDY The only way we're ever gonna know for sure is for somebody to come forward and set the record straight. And if that means Goober and Floyd gotta be put on trial, well, then I guess it's my responsibility to make sure that happens. Opie sighs, defeated. OPIE I guess so. ANDY Good night, Opie. OPIE G'night, paw. ANDY You be sure and sleep on that other thing you was gonna ask me about. OPIE I will, paw. Andy turns out the light and closes the door. Opie continues to stare out the window.
