INT. COURTHOUSE - DAY Next morning. The whole town has crowded into the tiny courthouse to witness the trial of Floyd and Goober. Andy is justice of the peace. Barney, as bailiff, tries to calm the crowd. BARNEY Order!! I said, Order in the Court! Barney grabs Andy's gavel and bangs it repeatedly to silence the crowd. Andy has to take it away from him. ANDY Everybody simmer down. Let's come to order. The crowd falls silent. ANDY Ordinarily, as you know, a case like this gets sent up to Mount Pilot for trial. But seeing as there's a pressing need for local justice, and since I'm empowered to serve as the justice of the peace from time to time, I thought it'd be in the best interest of the whole community to make sure these boys get a speedy trial and sentencing right here in Mayberry. The crowd murmurs approval. Opie comes in and takes a seat at the back, next to Aunt Bee. Andy addresses the prisoners. ANDY Floyd Lawson and Goober Pyle -- FLOYD Right here, Andy. GOOBER Hey, Andy. ANDY Raise your right hands. They do. Barney brings a Bible to swear them in. BARNEY Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothin' but the truth, so help you God? GOOBER Well, gee, I dunno. FLOYD When you put it like that. GOOBER Do we have to, Andy? ANDY Now, fellas, under the Constitution, I can't force you to testify against yourself. But I also can't have a murderer roaming the streets. So if somebody don't allocute right quick, I'm gonna have to convict you both just for general public safety. Floyd and Goober exchange glances. FLOYD I'm sorry, Andy, I have nothing to say. GOOBER Me, neither, Andy. I mean, Your Honor. ANDY Well, all right then. If there's nothing else... Andy shoots Opie a look. Opie fidgets uncomfortably. ANDY ...I might as well go ahead and pass sentence. OPIE Paw? I got something to say. The crowd murmurs, astonished. GOOBER You don't have to say nothing, Opie. You heard what your paw said. It's against the Constitution. OPIE It's okay, Goober. I got a responsibility. TIME CUT TO
